CHICAGO CULTURAL CENTER “Surviving the Long Wars” Reckon and Reimagine ABOUT: The culture center was completed in 1897 as Chicago’s first central public library, the building was designed to impress and to prove that Chicago had grown into a sophisticated metropolis. The country’s top architects and craftsmen used the most sumptuous materials, such as rare, imported marbles, polished brass, fine hardwoods, and mosaics of Favrile glass, mother-of-pearl, and colored stone, to create an architectural showplace. In 1991, the building was established as the Chicago Cultural Center by the   Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs , the nation's first and most comprehensive free municipal cultural venue. Every year, the Chicago Cultural Center presents hundreds of free international, national, regional, and local artists, musicians, and performers, providing a showcase where the public can enjoy and learn about the arts. EXPERIENCE AT THE MCA MUSEUM The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago is one of the world’s largest museums dedicated to contemporary art. Here, the public can experience the work and ideas of living artists and understand the historical, social, and cultural context of the art of our time. Since our inception in 1967, it has been our mission to exhibit new and experimental work in all media, paired with ambitious learning programs. In 1974, the MCA expanded its mission to include collecting and preserving contemporary art for future generations with the inauguration of a collection that has grown to include more than 2,000 works. The MCA engages audiences of today and tomorrow, working closely with our community to create space for dialogue, learning, and growth.   SWAMP RUINS Artist Bio: I work as a freelance artist in print, web, and corporate presentations. Besides graphics, I create a large, unique body of work: self-contained abstract assemblages/dioramas. In desk drawers and wooden boxes, I collage landscapes with materials like resin-infused paper, rusted objects, toys, fabric, wig hair, and twigs. I show haunting, eerie post-industrial dream vistas in colorful Led backlighting. I mix beauty with mystery and dark humor. Thinking inside the box, I scavenge desk drawers and wooden boxes to house semi-abstract landscapes. I collage rusted metal, fabric, scavenged machine parts, broken toys, twigs, and bones. Backgrounds are fabric or layers ...
