EXPERIENCE AT THE MCA MUSEUM

EXPERIENCE AT THE MCA MUSEUM

The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago is one of the world’s largest museums dedicated to contemporary art. Here, the public can experience the work and ideas of living artists and understand the historical, social, and cultural context of the art of our time.

Since our inception in 1967, it has been our mission to exhibit new and experimental work in all media, paired with ambitious learning programs. In 1974, the MCA expanded its mission to include collecting and preserving contemporary art for future generations with the inauguration of a collection that has grown to include more than 2,000 works.

The MCA engages audiences of today and tomorrow, working closely with our community to create space for dialogue, learning, and growth.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Tavares Strachan (b. 1979, Nassau, Bahamas; lives in Nassau and New York, NY)

In Broad Daylight, 2018

Neon

Like Tavares Strachan's other monumental neon installations, In Broad Daylight uses open-ended language to provoke moments of self-recognition and reflection. The phrase "in broad daylight" is generally invoked to describe violent or illegal acts that occur during the daytime and are visible to any within eyesight. Placed in the context of the MCA, the installation also gestures toward the violence committed against Black, Brown, and Indigenous bodies on the streets of Chicago, as well as the narratives often excluded from museums.

REASON WHY I CHOOSE THIS ARTWORK

Light is something that makes vision possible. Every human love light and detests darkness. Light reveals what is hidden in visibility. The radiance and lamination of light give one sense of refreshment.
